sara and i took an overnight train last night from margoa down to ernakulam and then caught a rickshaw out to fort cochin where we will be staying for the next three nights. the train was super crazy and we of course got seated with a huge indian family that was very loud and had many children. unfortunately the lights on the train went off far too late and came back on far too early and so i am not sure how much sleep i was actually able to get. the great news is that it isn't raining in cochin and we are hoping it holds out for tomorrow when we take an all day backwaters trip through the rivers about an hour south on a canoe. our rickshaw driver took us straight to his sister's house where she rents out four rooms and convinced us to stay with her. actually we didn't need convincing, the room is very nice and only 200 rupees which is about 5 dollars a night and in a great location right in the downtown of fort cochin. we spent the afternoon walking the city and seeing the different influences of the past colonializations. fort cochin has been controlled by the portugese, arabian, dutch, british, jewish, chinese and now it is finally under the control of the indians. there are beautiful churches here and the oldest christian church in india is in cochin. tonight we are going to watch the katikali dance which is a dance of kerala (the state we are currently in). so far i think this is my favorite place, it has a lot of character and is much more pedestrian friendly than other cities. i am also excited for some cooking lessons from the lady we are staying with...it should at least be very interesting... Wow - that's an amazingly dramatic facepainting image! Was he a participant in some sort of dance or ceremony? It's a rather fierce look! (Keep safe, goes without saying, but thought maybe I'd mention it anyway - you know - it's a Mom thing.)
