ponder

i really don't know if anyone is still reading this since i am done with my travels but i will write anyway. last night we were playing some games and then jon jenner posed this question: three men stop to rent a hotel room, typically the room costs $25 but the hotel manager saw that the men were from out of town and took advantage of the situation and charged the men $30 for the room. once each of the men paid $10 and went to their room the manager felt extremely guilty and gave $5 to the bellboy to take to the men. the bellboy thought about the situation and realized $5 can't be split evenly among three so he took $2 and gave $1 back to each man. now, each man had paid $9 for the room, totalling $27, the bellboy had $2, but this only adds up to $29...
anyway, i just really like these kinds of things, maybe someone else out there will too.

Hey Amanda,

We worked it out after much Maust-style deliberating. You know how that goes... But honestly, Sarah "got it" more than me.

Thanks Amanda,

This is a great brain teaser for my Challenge Students. I'll be back into the swing of things in the classroom starting Aug. 23rd.

Warmly,
Margo

How can such simple math lead one down the wrong path so enticingly?!? And it's so daggone challenging to get back to the beginning and choose a different path! UGH - Math!!!
